Any home remedies for breaking up chest congestion when you have a cold?

I did the zycam-medicine thing, I drink plenty of fluids like soups and teas all day, but I have this dry cough and nothing is breaking up my congestion. Any home remedies?
I don’t have vics vapor rub in the house, so anything that doesn’t require me going to the drugstore would help.
Thanks!

Try a hot bath. Hot as you can stand it–careful not to scald yourself. Soak in it for a while as the water cools down. It will definitely relax you and should help the congestion.

Hot herbal tea or a fragrant tea such as Earl Grey or Oolong will also help. With a cold, time is your ally and friend. They usually run their course and break up on your own. The hot bath is also good if you are running a fever.

I am very much a believer in the power of a hot bath. I take one every evening, regardless of how I am feeling. I’m 67 years young and have no issues with arthritis or joint pains.and I consider the hot bath to be the real Fountain of Youth.

Reclining or lying down should also help reduce the drainage that is causing the cough. I’ve got one of those, too, darn it, and I’m taking Mentholyptus cough drops and drinking hot teas to relieve it.

what sorts of herbs and spieces do you put on your salads?

I love greens with things like mushrooms, onions, pea pods, tomatoes, croutons, and veggie parmesian cheese, but lately I’ve been feeling the urge to try new things. I’m not big on meat, and as for salad dressings, I usually use fat free caesar or italian. Do you put spices or herbs on salads?

Mrs. Dash original blend or the Table blend.

What are some natural remedies and diet tips for my cat’s kidney disease?

My cat, 6 yrs old, could possibly have kidney failure (it might be a bladder infection but I won’t find out for another 2 weeks after antibiotics); he’s still energetic and doesn’t show any signs of illness. Ironically I have kidney disease as well and am using natural remedies like dandelion root tea and other herbs. Wheatgrass has also improved my health a lot. I am wondering these herbs would apply to cats as well?

Does anyone have any suggestions for diet (should it be homemade)? I’ve been doing research and they all say low salt, but some sites say good high quality protein while others say low protein. And should I stop using the chemical Frontline (flea medicine) on my cat?

Also, where on my cat are his kidneys located?

Thanks!

First off…the kidneys are located just past the send of the rib cage on both sides…the right kidney is slightly closer to the front of the cat. Frontline Plus doesn’t go into the animals system, so it will have no effects on the kidneys…so don’t stop using it. I wouldn’t reccomend any "natural remedies" without consulting your vet…cats and people can very different recations to plants…and a lot of plats can be nephrotoxic (toxic to the kidneys) in cats!

A diet wont help kidney failure until bloodwork confirms Azotemia…this means the that BUN and CREATINIE are elevated. So unless this has been confirmed by your vet, changing the diet wont help. However, if Azotemia is confirmed, then a low protein/low phospherous diet is highly recomended. The protein that is in the kidney diets is a high quality one. Several brands make kidney diets…. Purina NF, Royal Canin/IVD modified….Hill’s K/D….. Royal Canin Renal LP….. However, they are by prescription only, so you have to get them from your vet. If you are interested in making your own diet, you can contact UC Davis, and for a small fee, they will formulate a diet you can cook at home specificaly for your cats needs….

I’m not sure why its going to take so long to confirm that your cat has kidney disease…a simple blood test should confirm if the kidney values are normal or not.

Good Luck!

Does any one know of a gOOd book on this? One that covers many different types of herbs, how to gorw from seed, how to cultivate/harvest, and so on? You know a book that shows more than just pictures! One that well worth the money even if it is 40-50 bucks…

I keep reading about several different books online, but since I cant see in them and my local bookstore doesnt have them, I’m afraid to buy without asking for your opinion… thanks.

Why doesn’t the FDA approve some herbal remedies but approves pharmaceuticals with known side effects?

Some herbal remedies are not approved for human consumption even though they have been used traditionally by humans for centuries with very little side effects. One of the herbs I’ve taken works better than a well know medication which has been know to cause bad side effects. Why won’t the FDA approve some things that have well documented histories of human use, but have no problem approving newly developed synthetics?
I’m just glad I found this something that works for me. I can see this remedie becoming band at some point. I say what it is but I don’t want to draw attention
The particular herb I take is sold as not for human consumption because it isn’t FDA approved. However the alkaloids in this herb have been scientifically proven, and well documented to work the same on certain receptors in the brain without a common side effect to a synthetic commonly prescribed for this condition.

I guess they have vowed not to approve anything which can possibly cure you, just the things which can make you dependent upon more chemicals so all you are good for is to keep on taking those drastic chemicals which they have the audacity of calling Medicine. What else do you expect from FDA(Fools, Dolts and A**holes) ? They can’t bite the hand which feeds them my friend, or can they. You can check on their authenticity by the number of paid goons who are giving all of you THUMBS DOWN to even answer against them on this friendly forum. correct me if I am wrong.

What home remedies gets rid of redness from pimples?

I have no pimples in the spots but from the pimples its red, what home remedies could I use to get rid of the redness?

Try crushing up an aspirin. Don’t use the one that has a "candy coating" though, because it wont work. The Ibuprofen helps to heal and relieve the redness and soreness of most pimples.

Just use one or two tablets, and crush in a dish until they are a fine powder. Add a little splash of water so it becomes more of a paste, and spread on your pimple(s). Leave it for a while (I usually do it before I go to bed…but a good hour should do it).

It might not work right away and you may have to do it a couple of times, because it depends on the sensitivity of your skin and the severity of the acne.

If it’s just surface redness that you have, this might work… But that’s usually a sign that there is acne under the skin and it has not surfaced yet. For this you need an astringent (something with a little alcohol in it that will clean deep in your pores), which you would have purchase at your local pharmacy.

Hope this helps!

my sister has cancer need herbs for cancer pain?

my sister has cancer and she asked me to get her some mary jane for her pain. does it work and how do i brew it i dont think she can smoke it she’s not able. help

She needs to talk to her doctor before using marijuana. If its appropriate, her doctor will support it. However, there could be complications. Real marijuana falls under the neutropenic diet of restricted foods, so if her blood counts are low, that needs to be considered. Also, marijuana could interact with some of the narcotics she is already on.

As far as cooking with it, google for recipes. There are tons. Cooking it allows the patient to use it, even when under neutropenic restrictions, as well.

But, her doc MUST be consulted before she uses it. MUST.

Also, remember legal issues. If it is illegal in your area, she may be better off asking for a marinol script. Also, while it is unlikely to get marijuana laced with anything, you do have to consider where you are getting it from. What is the quality? What chemicals was it grown with?

However, for pain, the doc is more likely going to want to try meds first, like oxy. Marijuana is great for nausea, and can work for pain, but doesnt always. Oxy is more likely to work, but can leave her far more medicated.

Is the Chinese Herbal pill Lida Daidaihua slimming capsule safe and effective?

I was doing some research and found on one website that this pill includes sibutramine which is a prescription med that suppresses appetite. On Lida Daidaihua website they are not very specific on the list of ingredients like other diet pills such as EphedraP57.

Most of the over the counter diet medication are dangerous. They are not subject to FDA evaluation and can contain dangerous compounds, which, if unmonitored, can give dangerous side effects.

See the following:

http://www.cbc.ca/consumers/market/recalls/reclfull/2006/05apr2006.html

That is from Canada, which has a food/drug administration way more liberal than that of FDA in this country.

If you want diet pill, go see your doctor.
