What is the best book available about medicinal herbs?

Great question! I love Opening Our Wild Hearts To The Healing Herbs by Gail Faith Edwards. The book stands out because it covers medicinal uses, nutritional properties, the herb’s history, traditional native uses, wise women traditions, AND how to grow/wild harvest the plants AND well-organized coverage of how to process the medicine – tinctures, infusions, etc. The book uses beautiful line drawings (by the author), so a second book with photos or personal experience may be helpful for identification in the wild.

You can read more about her farm and online herbal study course here too:

I highly recommend the Ringing Cedars Series by Vladimir Megre, which is also recommended by Steven Foster, author of A field guide to medicinal plants and herbs:

Also check out “Wildman” Steve Brill (famous for being arrested for eating dandelion leaves he picked in NYC, and now he conducts foraging tours in NYC) and his book Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places.

Back To Eden is excellent too, especially if you live in the Upper Midwest. Peace.

Are there any natural, herbal remedies for depression?

I realize I do need medication, but I am very hesitant about putting all those chemicals in my body, and I despise the pharmaceutical industry. I know there are lots of herbal remedies out there for helping with other ailments, but those are more physical then mental. Help?

The only natural things I can suggest are: meditating, music, weed, friends, and nature. Other than that, there’s not many natural ailments to be found. Good luck with your depression, and the answer usually can always be found within our selves, really.

Natural Remedy for Erectile Dysfunction

Contributed by: (http://www.india-herbs.com):

In order for erection to occur, the nerves of the penis must be functioning properly, blood circulation to the penis must be adequate, and there must be stimulus from the brain. If there is something interfering with any or all of these conditions, a full erection is not possible. Common causes for erectile dysfunction include diseases that affect blood flow and nerves, psychological factors such as stress, depression, and performance anxiety, and injury to the penis.

According to the National Institutes of Health, a majority of men at some point in their life experience occasional failure to achieve erection which can occur for a variety of reasons such as drinking too much alcohol or from being extremely tired. Failure to achieve erection less than 20% of the time is not unusual and medical treatment is rarely needed. But the causes for this minor problem might lead to a permanent condition where failure to achieve erection occurs more than 50% of the time. Once this stage of erectile dysfunction is reached, medical treatment is required to reverse the situation. Approximately 5 percent of 40-year-old men and between 15 and 25 percent of 65-year-old men experience erectile dysfunction on a long-term basis.

Western medicine relies on aggressive prescription drugs and surgery to deal with many problems related to sexual dysfunction. Unfortunately, these methods often result in unwanted and even dangerous side effects. Non-medical methods of penis enhancement through exercise using weights, straps, rings, and pumps have proven destructive to muscle tissue. And natural pills provide fleeting, inconsistent results.

Ayurveda, the science of life, prevention and longevity, is the oldest and most holistic and comprehensive medical system available. Its fundamentals can be found in Hindu scriptures called the Vedas – the ancient Indian books of wisdom written over 5,000 years ago. Ayurveda uses the inherent principles of nature to help maintain health in a person by keeping the individual’s body, mind, and spirit in perfect equilibrium with nature.

India Herbs has a seasoned group of Ayurvedic doctors specialized in Vajikarana, one of the eight major specialties of Ayurveda. Vajikarana is “a process or a drug, which make a man sexually as strong as a horse and able to copulate for long and frequently with many wives and partners.” Vajikarana prescribes the therapeutic use of various aphrodisiacs and tonic preparations for enhancing the reproductive capabilities and vigor of men while strengthening the body and overall well-being.

India Herbs’ Vajikarana doctors combine a proprietary herbal formula based on centuries old wisdom with advice on diet, exercise, mental training, and relaxation to help men reach their peak and overcome sexual concerns through safe, natural means.

Results: The precise combination of ingredients in Kama Raja along with a mind-body focus precisely addresses the sexual concerns of men!

The Priority for Men is:
Erection Stamina and Sexual Prowess
Our seasoned team of Ayurvedic Doctors have combined experience of over 100 years in counseling and helping men to successfully achieve:

More Intense s.

Besides the proprietary process for producing Kama Raja capsules, the scientific principles involved have been thoroughly tested and proven over 5,000 years! For centuries, Indian kings and princes have used various Ayurvedic herbs mixed with milk, honey, and other nutrients to maintain the strength of a “thousand horses” required for adequately pleasuring their vast harems in the tradition of the Kama Sutra.

Kama Raja is a safe, proprietary selection of special herbs renowned for their aphrodisiac properties. Concentrated Extracts of these herbs have been blended in a powerfully effective combination to increase imilation and effective potency of each ingredient while eliminating unwanted side-effects. Gathered from throughout India, they include:

Ashwagandha – Withania Somnifera (Ashwangandha)
Shatavari – Asparagus Racemosus (Shatavari)
Atmagupta – Mucuna Pruriens (Velvet Bean)
Gokshura – Tribulus Terrestris (Tribulus)
Vidari – Pueraria Tuberosa (Indian Kudzu)
Jaiphal – Myristica Fragrans (Nutmeg)
Amalaki – Phyllanthus Emblica (Amla)
Shveta Mushali – Asparagus Adscendens (Asparagus Adscendens)
Ardraka – Zingiber Officinale (Ginger)
Pippali – Piper Longum (Long Pepper)
Akarkarabh – Anacyclus Pyrethrum (Spanish Pellitory)
Nirgudi – Vitex Negundo (Chinese Chaste Tree)

These ingredients comprise a Proprietary Blend that goes to work directly on the entire male reproductive system and genitalia, with positive and lasting impact on hormonal levels, blood flow, and penile responsiveness.

What home remedies that help get rid of or prevent acne?

I’ve tried lots of products to help cure me acne and none seem to work not even Proactiv, so that was a waste of my time buying it from the mall and my money -.-"
Now I am willing to try home remedies. I prefer fruits over vegetables, but if it helps, tell me which one:) Thanks.

OMG: Do not try that "urine therapy." Anyone who does, is either desperate or nuts.

Try washing your face with some good ole soap & water. I use Dove bath soap & my face is not only soft, but it’s acne free. Using circular motions, wash your face for two minutes. That is enough time to open your pores & clean them out. Make sure you use a "wash cloth" & not just your hands. The wash cloth will remove dirt & oils that clog the pores. If the pores aren’t cleaned out well, they close with the dirt & oil trapped inside. That’s why you end up with acne.

After you rinse your face well with warm water, splash some cold water on your face to close the pores. Drinking a lot of water daily, will flush out the impurities in your body, & before long, you’ll notice a difference in your face, your skin, your nails, & your hair. Your body needs water!!!

Keep your hair clean as oily bangs resting on the forehead, can cause acne.

When I was in high school, I washed my faced twice daily & three times daily on weekends, with Noxzema. I used it just like I did a bar of soap. When I was through patting my face dry with a towel, I applied a little of the Noxzema to my acne. If you decide to try it, & you wear a creamy/liquid makeup base, make sure you wash your face thoroughly at the end of the day. NEVER…go to bed with makeup on or you will have more acne than you would care to have.

edit: If you decide to try the Noxzema, it’s cheaper to buy it at the Dollar General or Family Dollar. :)

How long are herbs and spices good for?

I have a lot of herbs and spices that I recieved as a wedding gift two years ago. Im just now figuring out this whole cooking thing and I want to know if I should use these or buy new?
edit: Yes its been two years lol. I cook, I just havent been making anything interesting or different. Mainly chicken, spaghetti, pork chops, tacos, that sort of thing :)

Dried herbs and spices are only good for about a year tops. They loose what made them tasty . I think if the jars were sealed it may make a difference. You can always taste it… Good luck cooking, and remember to have fun.
