What are some examples of edible medicinal herbs?

As a homework assignment I need a list of six edible medicinal herbs and describe what they are for, what benifits, side effect ect.. Can you list some? Some links where I can research them or see what thier benifits/ side effects are would be great. 10 points for best answer. Thanks

Ginger – good for upset stomach/digestion
Cinnamon – good for maintaining a healthy blood sugar
Cayenne Pepper – good for circulation and cardiovascular health

There’s thousands of herbs out there that are eaten for benefits (and all of those are referred to as "Medicinal Herbs", so you’ve got quite a list to work from). You can find a LOT more information to research at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbalism
Looking at that article will also help you for your assignment because you can put them in your own words and don’t need to worry about the teacher thinking you plagiarized any of it ;-)

What is the best way to store herbs, garlic, onion, etc for long term use?

I would like to store herbs, garlic, onions, potatoes, etc for long term use. Most of what I buy tends to go bad before I use all of it. Any suggestions?

Dehyrdate them and then vacuum seal them.

If you take out the water, other organisms and internal enzymes in the herbs will not go active and break them down. Seal the air out, and you take away the chance for oxidative damage to the herbs. They will not keep forever, but it will extend storage. then keep them in a cool, dark place.

Chinese Herbal Medicines Treating Eczema?

My brother is in the process of taking this chinese herbal medicine to help with his really bad eczema. It’s basically dried herbs boiled in water for two hours then drank. Does anyone have any experience of taking this stuff, and do you know whether it works, or if there are any side effects? He’s only ten and we’ve tried all the Western medicines, and nothing’s worked.
Thank you

Hello there. I haven’t heard of drinking herbal decocts for eczema. Your brother may want to try topical herbal cream from Champori.com : it is based on Chinese (judging from names) herbs and works better than anything else I tried for my eczema.
Best,
Bernadette

What are some good medicinal herbs and their purposes?

Well, I have a project in school called the invention convention, in which we have to invent something and do a project on. Well, I came up with an idea, and we were required to do a patent search, patent application, etc. My invention is an herbal infused chewing gum, and now I’d like to know if you guys(or girls) know of any good herbs that I could use. So far I have decided to use Ginseng, Gingko-Bilboa extract, and Valerian. Also, it would be nice if you could tell me their uses and what they treat. All help is appreciated.

Are there any natural remedies for High blood pressure?

I was wondering if there were any remedies besides medication. I eat well and exercise but is there anything else I can do? Are there any natural supplements/vitamins?

There are herbal tinctures that you can get from a qualified naturopathic physician.

However, there are also things that you can do for yourself at home. Firstly, you must stop smoking if you are a smoker and avoid overweight and lower your salt intake.

There are a number of supplements that are used when treating hypertension:
Garlic
potassium [not if you are taking meds for BP, though]
calcium/magnesium
Co-enzyme Q-10
Vitamin E [start w/100 IU, raise 100 IU every 2 weeks until 400/800 IU]
Lecithin
Vitamin C
B-complex vitamin

Are medicinal plants still valued by pfizer, merck, & other research-based drug companies?

I am very interested in medicinal plants & herbs and their potential to cure cancer, AIDS, and other diseases. Can someone please give me insight into how valuable they are now to science and medicine and their future (value in the medicine business and science research) as well as with the FDA? Are they considered weak now and what about in the future? How can genetics and molecular biology be involved in research with these plants? What education do I need to be involved in the medicinal plant industry and in pfizer or other drug company giants?

They sure are. Most of our pharmaceuticals were originally derived from plants before they were manufactured artificially. It is not so much a matter of being "weak" as it is a matter of being standardized in strength.

If you are interested, attend a good school of pharmacy and take all the pharmacology courses you can. You might want to do graduate work in pharmacology as well.

Where can I find a list of herbal tea remedies and other holistic uses for different teas?

I would like a site that lets me know what holistic uses are available for teas and lists many different herbal tea remedies and recipes. As well as other ways to improve your health or weight through herbs.

http://www.naturalherbsguide.com/herbal-teas.html

There are also tons of books on this, if you want to take a trip to the bookstore, and you could find exactly how much of what and how often to take them.

What book on home remedies and herbal medicine is the best?

You see these informercials on herbal medicine and cures and I wonder to myself is there any value to these books. So what do you think, is there a popular book on home remedies that is worth having?

Little Herb Encyclopedia: The Handbook of Nature’s Remedies for a Healthier Life by Jack Ritchason is the one I’ve sworn by for many years now.
