Is Your Site A Rich Feast Or A Dogs Breakfast? Part 2 of 2

Nice sizzle, shame about the sausage. Legendary St Kilda and
Hawthorn coach Allan “Yabby” Jeans summed it up in his famous
post game quote. All the PR, advertising spend and marketing
resources will only get you so far. The web junk yard is full of
sows ear clutch purses and polished turds.

Marketing in general suffers from a bolt on philosophy in many
organizations. A means of promoting a fait accompli. An
afterthought to be brought in at the conclusion of the product
cycle to stir up some hype and bundle it into a neat Powerpoint
presentation. In this environment then web marketing is often
the red headed step child of the marketing department. A bullet
point reference quickly glossed over and farmed off to the work
experience kid who knows a bit of Photoshop.

This is a mistake. A good snag can make a BBQ whereas a bad one
reminds everyone that it is really just ground meat in a pigs
intestine. Success requires a good recipe and involvement of
someone who has marketing interests at heart in the preparation
stage.

In the last issue I discussed the ingredients and encouraged
marketers to be honest in their initial review and goal setting.
Basically, (to continue the use of gratuitous sporting clichés),
to enter the metaphorical hall of mirrors and have a good hard
look at themselves, their website and the organization.

Hopefully this has now taken place and now suitably armed with
this information we can start to cook. Please note that this
article is very much a serving suggestion, much like the bananas
on the front of the Corn Flakes box, rather than a set of hard
and fast rules. Like all good recipes the best results can often
be delivered through adding your own little touches.

The Recipe.

Task 1 – Shell the eggs:

Remove any items that cannot be digested by search engines.
Specifically this includes…

• Remove any use of Frames on the site. Frames are a simple way
of allowing content on a page to scroll within the page
boundaries rather than requiring the entire page itself to
scroll. Frames are however search engine poison for the
following reasons.

* Content in frames cannot be book marked or linked to

* Search engines do not recognise the unified frameset and if it
catalogues the content at all it will index each frame as a
separate page leading to links to content without menus or menus
without content.

* Frames can look ugly and different browsers will display them
differently.

* Having to resort to frames generally illustrates an
organisational problem with the website. Proper use of a
database with a Content Management System (CMS) generally
eliminates the need for frames. It is generally better to split
long content over multiple pages (pagination) than have long
amounts of scrolling text within a frameset or otherwise. This
also gives search engines more pages to list and can help boost
your ranking for keywords contained within.

• Remove any text content that is contained within images or
Flash animations and replace with HTML text wherever possible.
Search engines cannot read Flash.

• If the menu is constructed or displayed using images, Flash or
JavaScript make sure that these menu links are also available as
HTML links somewhere else on the page. Generally the easiest way
to do this unobtrusively is to duplicate these items in the
footer at the bottom of the page. This allows search engines to
always be able to navigate around your site. Remember search
engines can’t read images, Flash or JavaScript.

• As much as possible bundle any JavaScript elements (commonly
used in rollovers and image maps) into Include files to be
called when required rather than requiring to be written into
the code of each page. This is probably going to require the
input of a developer and probably falls under the nice to have
rather than must have items.

Task 2 – Add Herbs and Spices:

The following are a list of simple things that can usually be
done quite quickly to a website to make it taste better to
search engines.

* Insert Heading tags. Search engines love tags as their
search algorithm rates content within these tags as being more
important than general text and ranks accordingly. Fill these
tags with the best keyword mix and make sure that different
pages have differing keyword variations. Best results come from
placing H1 as close as possible to the top of the page. Use
these wherever a heading or sub heading appears on site. If it
is important enough to place on its own line in bold then it
should be in a heading tag.

* Use relevant page titles (Title tags) and make them at least
slightly different for each page. Title should have 5 to 8 words
for best results. This should incorporate the highest priority
keywords for the particular page. (Prominence may vary if
doorway pages in use.). Note: If the title length is more than
75 characters, the extra characters may be cut in certain
browsers or systems (eg. Mac) and your listings may not have an
attractive look in search engine results.

* Place short relevant descriptive Alt tags on all click able
images (one or two words). Whilst search engines cannot read
images they can read the Alt tag that accompanies each image.
Alt tags display first prior to an image loading meaning that
they can be viewed and read irrespective of whether the image
accurately loads. Alt tags also display when a user mouses over
an image containing them providing more information regarding
the effect of clicking on a link and helping boost site
usability. Alt tags should only be used on links to avoid user
confusion over what are click able areas and what are not.

* Consider a relevant naming strategy for images on site. (eg.
enedia_melbourne_office.jpg not 00002.jpg)

Task 3 – Sprinkle site liberally with keywords:

Using the keyword list compiled via the techniques discussed in
the last issue the site copy should be re worked to accommodate
these wherever possible. From the Google Adwords and Overture
tools, plus a bit of common sense, you will be able to compile a
priority list. The trick is to saturate the site with these
keywords to appease search engines without making it unreadable
for humans. Additionally over optimised sites can be viewed by
search engines as spam and penalised accordingly. A few dos and
don’ts…

* Do: Try and include at least 200 words of searchable text on
your homepage plus any other common entry pages to your site.

* Do: Use plural and singular versions of key words. This helps
with your sites readability and covers your bases with search
engines.

* Do: Try and make relevant keywords link to other relevant
pages on site. Try and do this often but not to the extent that
it becomes confusing to users.

* Do: Incorporate geographic locators to narrow the
categorisation.

* Do: Use this keyword list as basis for defining page titles
and meta tags.

* Don’t: Never try and make text invisible to try and trick
search engines. Such action will either be picked up by the
search engine cataloguing process (eg. By checking the text
colour against the background colour in the code) or leave you
open to a complaint by a competitor. Either way your site and
your IP address could be black listed.

* Don’t: Never just list keywords on a page unless it is in a
menu. Such action can be regarded as spam and end up coming back
to bite you.

Task 3 – The Cooking:

In many ways the actual implementation strategies, timing and
follow up required will depend upon your business and the make
up and competitiveness of your market. Some industries, niche
markets and locations will be easier to secure than others or
require a differing mix. With such a horses for courses approach
then the following should be considered as suggestions only.
Sometimes you need Damien Oliver to ride the frisky nag round
the track whereas other times all you need is for Jamie Oliver
to make the horse edible.

* Always integrate the site to compliment other offline
marketing spend. List your URL in your Yellow Pages ad and link
to it in the electronic version. If possible set up a unique
landing page for arrivals from Yellow Pages (or any other
directory) so that you can track effectiveness in delivering
leads.

* Get your URL on everything that your company sends out. Search
engines deliver customers who don’t know you. Make sure those
that do come direct by making sure that your URL is always handy.

* Consider utalising third party campaign management and
analysis providers. Two of the main players in Australia are
Hitwise (www.hitwise.com.au) and Red Sheriff
(www.redsheriff.com.au). Both of these companies can provide a
range of valuable information. They do tend however to have
differing focuses. Hitwise tends to be more focused on
positioning as related to competitiors whereas Red Sheriff tends
to be more introspective and focuses on your site in isolation
(or at least only in comparison with any of your competitors who
also happen to use their tracking system). In the end the choice
will depend upon your individual requirements.

Using a third party can take a lot of the headache out of the
ongoing monitoring and maintenance of search engine marketing
campaigns. A company such as Hitwise can actually set up
programs for hundreds (or even thousands) of keyword
combinations and juggle the focus, targeting and advertising
spend for each. One of the most important parts of this is to
make sure that you are not paying for clicks for keywords on
which you are already getting a first page free listing. This
can vary over time and unless you are monitoring can slip
through unnoticed.

* Keep your content fresh. Only pigeons like stale bread and
they shit on statues. The more times your site is updated the
more likely that search engines will re index it and boost its
ranking. Frequent updates also encourage repeat patronage which
is important as web statistics indicate that few online
purchases are made on a visitors first visit to a web site.
Encourage engagement through web only specials, real discounts,
convenience (theirs not yours) and quick response times.

* Consider online advertising. The day of the banner ad being
the be all and end all of web marketing is long past, however it
does have its place. The key metric for online spend is now
skewed in favour of the advertiser. Rates are charged based on
click throughs rather than simply exposure. Care should be taken
that the wording of the ad and the positioning is such as to
deliver relevant referrals that are likely to engage with the
site and lead to a potential sale not simply dump traffic
looking for something else. You are paying for each arrival
after all. Using the search engine direct ad delivery services
(eg. Google AdSense) will more than likely help your site
positioning as well. Anecdotal evidence abounds regarding the
tendancy for a site to miraculously leap in free listings once a
paid ad campaign is purchased.

* Stir constantly. Make sure that your website statistics
indicate the most common keywords used to arrive at your site.
If it doesn’t then set up one that does. Review these statistics
in conjunction with the other keyword performance tools and
refine the keywords used on site accordingly.

Remember it can take several months before the full effects of
any search engine optimization overhaul can take effect. Whilst
investing in a pay per click campaign can have almost immediate
listing effects (assuming that you are prepared to spend to
maintain prominence) it is the combination of on and off site
techniques that will ensure success in the free listings. This
is where the majority of customer traffic will come from

Size of your belly while pregnancy

Sometimes it seems for pregnant women that their belly is growing before their eyes, or, on the contrary, it’s almost unnoticeable. Let’s read experts comments on this question.

Which factors sizes of belly during pregnancy depend on?

Height of belly, i.e. height of uterus normally corresponds to the term of pregnancy. For example, on 32nd week of pregnancy it should be 32-33 cm. And volume of belly depends on a woman’s individual peculiarities. Sometimes anatomic structure affects it: miniature women with slim pelvis have bigger belly, than tall women with full thighs have. But most of all growth of belly is connected with pregnant woman’s general weight gaining. This is the factor which a woman should always pay attention to.

Which weight gaining is considered to be normal?

Every woman has her own individual norm. It depends on index of body mass, which can be calculated according to a special formula. Divide weight in kg on height in square meters. Normal index is from 19,8 to 25,9. If you’re expecting twins, add at least 2,3-4,6 kg to this figures.
Majority of women gain 40% of weight during the first half of pregnancy, 60% – during the second. If a woman had normal weight before pregnancy, then in the first term she may gain 1,5-2 kg, during the second – 0,5 kg a week, and for the whole 9th month – no more than 0,5-1 kg. Weight should be increased evenly and little by little. Normal baby’s development depends on this.

What are the dangers of overweight?

If a woman gained too much weight, both she and fetus may experience troubles. Excessive weight gaining – is one of the symptoms of late toxicosis, unhealthy state of a pregnant woman. Late toxicosis may lead to development of miscarriage threat. Under such circumstances, a woman begins feeling pains in waist and lower part of belly. In extremely serious cases premature delivery or premature placenta exfoliation may take place.
Moreover, overweight makes muscles work difficult. It also leads to edemas on feet, front abdominal wall, hands. Back and calf-leg muscles begin aching, blood circulation in legs’ veins is gets broken, varicose disease becomes more intense. Pregnant woman gets tired more often and strong, becomes irritable. As for fetus, late toxicosis may cause chronic anoxaemia and even pre-natal death. Very full women’s risk of such complications is higher.

What can cause extremely quick weight gaining during pregnancy?

Sometimes those who like eating well gain weight quickly. However, moderation in eating still doesn’t guarantee normal weight. Too much liquid may accumulate in some women’s organisms – for example, when kidneys work not well enough. So, if a pregnant woman gains weight too quickly, she should check quantity of liquid she drinks and evolves for day-and-night. Healthy woman evolves more liquid, than she drinks. And accumulation of liquid in organism leads to overweight. Then not only external organs, but also internal become swollen. Placentas’ edemas are especially dangerous: they break normal fetus development.

How can a pregnant woman get rid of edemas?

While visiting maternity welfare centre, she should pay careful attention to recommendations concerning regimen of nutrition, which a doctor will give to her. As a rule, doctors advice all pregnant women to limit salt, piquant, fried and fat products consumption. The matter is that these products contribute to liquid accumulation in organism and lead to edemas. Once in 10 days it is recommended to arrange fasting days. Of course, this doesn’t mean a pregnant woman should go without food. Hunger is categorically contra-indicated to a future mother. During fasting days a pregnant woman should restrict herself with certain products, for example, apples, cotton cheese, kefir, meat in strictly determined quantities. Moreover, she should observe confinement to bed – this improves liquid excretion out of organism. Diuretic herbs also help a lot. However, she shouldn’t restrict quantity of liquid drunken suddenly. She should drink no less than 1,2-1,5 liters per day-and-night.

It turns out that it’s rather simple to struggle with edemas?

Unfortunately, not always. Weight gaining depends on kidneys’ work in many aspects. Thus, for example, weight is gained quickly if a woman has chronic urolithiasis, chronic pyelonephritis. Sometimes pyelonephritis appears already during pregnancy. As hormonal background is changing during this period. Organism begins producing more of a hormone, contributing to urinary tracts dilation. And various infections come to kidneys through these open gates. That’s why all pregnant women should pass bacteriological test of vagina’s excretions, control urine analyses constantly.

What if a pregnant woman has too big fetus and this explains her overweight?

Such thing happens sometimes. But this may testify of another problem. Very often women suffering from diabetes have big fetus. If a woman herself was born being big, then she needs to check sugar content in blood and urine, as diabetes can proceed also in latent form. Sometimes diabetes appears already during pregnancy. Again because of hormonal background change. Such pregnant women are in a risk group – even if heightened sugar content was shown only on one of several tests. By the way, overweight during pregnancy often force accoucheurs to use Cesarean section.

On which terms sudden weight gaining is specially unwanted?

Excess weight gaining is especially dangerous in the second half of pregnancy, to be more exact, since 20th week. And the earlier such complications happen, the more difficult confinement a woman will have.
That’s why we recommend women to take care of their weight, take arterial pressure on both hands and urine tests. If a woman has late toxicosis, as a rule, her blood pressure increases and albumen appears in urine. If all 3 symptoms are found – edemas, heightened blood pressure and albumen in urine – a woman is urgently hospitalized.

Probably my question will surprise you. Is it possible to “adjust” a size of fetus somehow?

I think, yes. Balanced nutrition, including products, rich in animal and vegetable proteins, vitamins, minerals, is necessary for this. A woman should take vitaminous preparations for sure. Of course, these are copy-book truths, but a woman observes these rules not always, for this or that reason.

Apparently, size of belly depends also on quantity of amniotic fluids? Does liquid a woman drinks influence them?

No. Reasons of excess of amniotic fluids are quite other: diabetes, anomalies of fetus development, Rhesus-conflict, infectious complications. If a woman has little amniotic fluids, this quite often means she will give birth to a post-mature baby.

Probably, too small belly is better, than too big?

No, I wouldn’t say that. Insufficient weight gaining often leads to defect of fetus development, giving birth to a very small baby, premature birth, and sometimes even to death of a new-born. Pregnant women should strive for “golden middle”.
By the way, American scientists noticed that women with optimistic view on life give birth to babies of small weight less often. Experts explain that optimist women take care of their health better: do exercising regularly and eat well.

Is there a straight dependence between a pregnant woman’s emotional state and excess kilograms?

Probably, there is. You know, being under stress situation, some women begin eating any food they see and emptying fridge. Here goes excess weight. And, on the contrary, other women just cannot eat at all in stress situation. That’s why it’s so important for close people and future mother herself to take care of her stable, calm emotional mood.

Approximate allocation of weight gained during pregnancy
Baby 3,5 kg
Placenta 0,675 kg
Amniotic fluid 0,8 kg
Increased uterus 0,9 kg
Breasts 0,45 kg
Volume of mother’s blood 1,5 kg
Intracellular fluid of mother 1,4 kg
Adipose cellulose of mother 3,25 kg
GENERAL WEIGHT INCREASE 11,9 kg

Creating Your Personal Acid Reflux Recipe Book

Acid reflux is a reality for many, and there are many reasons why it might happen. Though stress can be a problem, often the foods and drinks that people choose are the biggest triggers. Things like alcohol, soda, spicy foods, fatty foods, and come citrus can bring on a world of pain for some. Some who have GERD like to put together an acid reflux recipe book to keep track of the foods that don’t bother them. Having such a book will make it easier for anyone with this condition to eat the right foods more often.

Before you begin compiling recipes, you should think about how you are going to store them. You print can them out or write them down, but you may not be able to keep track of them that way. That means you probably aren’t going to use them because you can’t find them. A simple three ring binder is always a great idea, or you can use a box with index cards. These will keep all of your acid reflux recipes in one place.

When it comes to recipes, you might want to consider laminating the pages. This is extra work and an extra expense, but regular paper gets ruined very easily when in the kitchen. Laminating will help keep your recipes safe from grease, and they can be wiped off easily if something were to spill.

Finding recipes might be a matter of trial and error, but the there are tons to be found online. A simple search can dig up hundreds. You have to decide what you think sounds good. You can print them out and put them in your binder, or you can write them out on your index cards.

You should start with things that you know you would like, and then slowly add new things you would like to try. GERD sufferers should make sure their recipes are well balanced with proteins and carbs, and should be low fat most of the time. Keep that in mind as your browse online. Don’t forget that you can also find great recipes by asking your doctor for recommendations.

You can also find recipes by tweaking some of your favorite recipes that give you problems. You can also write them from scratch if you pay attention to what you can eat, and what is known to give you problems.

Things you should avoid would be citrus fruits, milk products (if you suffer from lactose intolerance), spicy foods, many sweets, fatty meats (buy lean cuts), and many forms of white potato. Though taking the hot spices out of foods might sound like it makes for a bland diet, there are plenty of great herbs and seasonings that won’t aggravate acid reflux.

It might take you a while to come up with your own collection, but if you add a few new ones a week, your acid reflux recipe book will grow rather quickly. Though some of the foods that should be avoided bother many, they may not bother you. That is what will make your recipe book unique. If you don’t have problems with spicy foods, then by all means include them.

There are no hard and fast rules for all people who have GERD. Even more important than what you eat is how you eat. Remember to eat smaller and more frequent meals, and keep servings small so your meals are not sitting in your stomach. That might be one of the biggest things to avoid.

Managing Diabetes Naturally

When we eat, our bodies break down the proteins, carbohydrates and fats we consume to be used as the building blocks of our bodies. Carbohydrates, such as those found in bread, pasta, rice, potatoes and cereals are first digested and converted into simple sugars in the intestines and then move from the intestines into the bloodstream. These simple sugars are our body’s first choice for energy production.

Glucose, a form of simple sugar is the basic fuel the body uses for energy. In order for our bodies to utilize this sugar however, it must be transported across the cell membrane where it can be used to feed and fuel our cells. Insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas, and more specifically by the islets of Langerhans, which are scattered throughout the pancreas, stimulates our body’s cells to absorb sugar, thus removing it from the blood stream.

When our bodies cannot properly utilize glucose, thus causing it to stay in the blood, we are diagnosed as having diabetes. Diabetes is a disorder which disrupts the mechanism by which the body controls blood sugar. The build-up of sugar in the blood, characterized by diabetes, can cause the cells of our bodies to be starved for glucose and can, if left unchecked, lead to damage of the eyes, kidneys, nerves and heart.

There are two types of diabetes: insulin dependent or Type 1 diabetes and non-insulin dependent or Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, is often referred to as juvenile or childhood-onset diabetes. Here, the pancreas cannot make the insulin needed by the body to process glucose. For individuals with Type 1 diabetes, while natural therapies may help the body be more receptive to insulin, they require regular injections of insulin to maintain health.

On the other hand, individuals with Type 2 or Adult-onset diabetes, their bodies produce varying amounts of insulin, but more often then not, the ability of their body’s cells to absorb sugar is diminished. While there are “classic” warning signs that often accompany diabetes, i.e., excessive thirst, excessive hunger, excessive urination, excessive tiredness, and unexplained weight loss, many people with type 2 diabetes do not have these symptoms. Individuals who are at a greater risk include people who are: over age 40, are overweight, have a family history of diabetes, have had diabetes during pregnancy, have high blood pressure or high blood fats, have the stress of an illness or injury, are a member of a high-risk ethnic group such as African-American, Hispanic, American Indian and Asian. For these individuals, natural therapies tend to work well.

Recommendations For Wellness

Reduce your consumption of starchy foods that are high in carbohydrates such as bread, potatoes, processed cereals, rice or that have a high glycemic index rating. The Glycemic Index is a system that ranks foods based on how they affect your levels of blood sugar.

Consume a high fiber, whole foods diet and work to eliminate preprocessed junk foods from your eating regimen.

Start an exercise program! In most cases, weight reduction can help those with type 2 diabetes. In addition to decreasing body fat, regular exercise has been show to improve insulin sensitivity.

Dietary fiber, such as psyllium has been show to improve glucose tolerance in some studies.

Incorporate brewer’s yeast or a chromium supplement into your health program. Chromium helps improve glucose tolerance by increasing our body’s sensitivity to insulin.

Supplement with vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B, Vitamin C, vitamin E, magnesium and zinc. Individuals with diabetes tend to have low levels of these important nutrients in their blood. In addition, these supplements have been shown to help to reduce damage to the eyes, nerves and kidneys – health problems that are often experienced by people with advanced or long term diabetes.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has also been show to improve insulin sensitivity.

Evidence suggests that supplementation with vitamin D can increase insulin levels in some people.

The herb Nopal can help to strengthen the liver and the pancreas thereby improving our body’s ability to utilize insulin.

Some sources recommend that you avoid the amino acid cysteine which has been reported to break down insulin and interfere with sugar absorption.

Stevia, a naturally sweet plant makes an excellent sugar substitute without the drawbacks of sugar. Stevia can be used in cooking as well. Visit your local health food store or look online for cookbooks that utilize stevia in place of sugar.

List of Carbohydrate Foods to Lose the Love Handles

The list of carbohydrate foods will prove that all carbohydrates are not created equal. The selected list of 10 complex carbohydrates used in dieting can provide your body with energy, optimum nutrition, proper organ function and a healthy, attractive appearance.

Complex carbohydrates are broken down into glucose more slowly than simple carbohydrates and thus provide a gradual steady stream of energy throughout the day. Basically these foods are found in wholegrain breads, oats, muesli and brown rice. Foods high in complex carbohydrates are loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals and therefore are just best for promoting health fitness.

* Rice bran protein complex is a blend of concentrated rice protein and stabilized rice bran. Also it has a slightly sweet vanilla flavor and mixes with water and flavored juices. It’s easy to digest and a nice alternative to dairy and soy proteins. The health benefits are well known and include strengthening immune function and supporting healthy levels of blood sugars and lipids.

* Carbohydrates in oatmeal have a very low glycemic index which allows the carbohydrates to be absorbed by our body very slowly. Oatmeal drastically decreases the cravings effect, contributes to weight loss and also helps fight diabetes and cholesterol.

* Buckwheat flour is one of the best sources of protein in the plant kingdom. Buckwheat has a unique, assertive flavor that is especially great in both quick and yeast breads. Also it is relatively low in calories and is an excellent source of protein, fiber and magnesium.

* The list of carbohydrate foods includes beans, which contain a higher percentage of complex carbohydrates and more nutrients. The beans such as chickpeas, white beans, black eye peas, refried beans, garbanzo beans and navy beans are rich in complex carbohydrates.

* Dairy products are known for rich fat and protein contents. However, some of the dairy products such as nonfat milk, low fat, plain yogurt, chocolate milk and skimmed milk are included in the list of high complex carbohydrate foods.

* Muesli mostly consists of crushed oat flakes. It can be supplemented with crushed wheat grains, corn flakes, dried fruits, walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, peeled sunflower seeds, etc. It is mostly poured with milk or fruit juice and has a low to moderate glycemic index, fibers, and small percentage of second-rate protein.

* Whole grains are a good source of fiber. Diets high in fiber have been associated with various health benefits such as lowering cholesterol, modulating blood sugar levels and reducing the risk of colon cancer.

* The list of carbohydrate foods includes brown bread as it takes longer time to digest. Brown bread from whole wheat is a complex carbohydrate, which means it takes the body longer to convert the carbohydrates to sugar, therefore keeping your blood sugar stable and making you less hungry.

* The term pasta describes the full range of macaroni and egg noodle shapes. Pasta is naturally low in fat and high in complex carbohydrates and has been on the top in the list of carbohydrate foods. Pasta is the perfect canvas for a wide variety of great tasting ingredients, but you must be able to make high quality pasta with finest ingredients.

* Finally the yams that are actually sweet potatoes with relatively moist texture and orange flesh. The sweet potato blends with herbs, spices and flavorings producing delicious dishes of all types. It is low in sodium and is a good source of fiber and other important vitamins and minerals.

The lists of carbohydrate foods stated above are frequently used to produce food products or meals. A good complex carbohydrate intake is essential to exercise effectively and make each workout more effective in losing body fat!
