Any home remedies for breaking up chest congestion when you have a cold?
I did the zycam-medicine thing, I drink plenty of fluids like soups and teas all day, but I have this dry cough and nothing is breaking up my congestion. Any home remedies?
I don’t have vics vapor rub in the house, so anything that doesn’t require me going to the drugstore would help.
Thanks!
Try a hot bath. Hot as you can stand it–careful not to scald yourself. Soak in it for a while as the water cools down. It will definitely relax you and should help the congestion.
Hot herbal tea or a fragrant tea such as Earl Grey or Oolong will also help. With a cold, time is your ally and friend. They usually run their course and break up on your own. The hot bath is also good if you are running a fever.
I am very much a believer in the power of a hot bath. I take one every evening, regardless of how I am feeling. I’m 67 years young and have no issues with arthritis or joint pains.and I consider the hot bath to be the real Fountain of Youth.
Reclining or lying down should also help reduce the drainage that is causing the cough. I’ve got one of those, too, darn it, and I’m taking Mentholyptus cough drops and drinking hot teas to relieve it.
I’ve heard breathing in steam works–just don’t burn yourself on the steam!

You could hire a vaporizer from you local drugstore and have it going at night while sleeping or
Lock yourself in the bathroom and turn the hot water tap on until room steams up or fill a basin with hot water and hold a towel over your head and the basin to breath in steam – you could add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the basin.
You poor thing – I hope you feel better real soon.
