Flu or Cold — A Chinese Herbal Prescription (5)
FLU or COLD – - A chinese herbal prescription.
A flu or cold usually goes away in a few days if you rest enough and drink a lot of water. However, the herbal prescription will help you recover faster, especially if you have a stubborn cough. It also reduces all the discomforts of the flu while you are recovering.
For elders, kids, or those who are weak, don’t wait for the flu to go away by itself. Take the herbs to end the flu sooner and prevent it from degenerating into something serious like bronchitis or pneumonia.
The prescription should be written according to what kind of symptoms the patient has, and the severity of those symptoms:
1) Fever or high temperature
Lian Qiao 連 翹
Huang Qin 黃 芩
Zhi Zi 枝 子
Di Gu Pi 地 骨 皮
2) Cough, phlegm and nasal congestion
Chuan Bei Mu 川 貝 母
Sang Bai Pi 桑 白 皮
Qing Pi 青 皮
Zi Su Ye 紫 蘇 葉
Pi Pa Ye 批 杷 葉
3) Indigestion requiring mild purging
Zhi Shi 枳 實
Fan Xie Ye 番 瀉 葉
4) Weak respiratory system (depending on the patient)
Bai Bu 百 步
Zi Wan 紫 菀
A combination of 13 herbs are recommended.
There are other symptoms requiring no treatment, because they will go away automatically when the flu is reduced, e.g. tiredness, aches and pains, or lack of appetite. These symptoms are your body’s natural reaction to the flu. It would be a mistake if herbs are prescribed to lessen those symptoms. Why? Those symptoms all require strengthening herbs which are “hot” in nature. The herbs you use for the flu have to be “cold” in nature. Thus you would create a conflict in your prescription. This conflict would result in lessening the overall effect of the herb package, and even worse, prolonging the flu. If those symptoms still remain after the flu is gone, something else is wrong and should be treated from a different angle by strengthening the body.
Drink one to two cups (8 oz each) of herb tea a day.
Chinese herbs are very effective in reducing the various discomforts of the flu and shortening its hold on you.
Most flu patients need less than five days of herbs to completely recover.
While you recover from the flu, remember to rest, drink more water, eat light meals, and avoid greasy, peppery, deep-fried and barbecued food.
This is just one formula with countless variations depending on:
* Severity and nature of the symptoms based on observation and discussion of the problem with the herbalist.
* How weak is your body and how much herbs you need to help you fight the flu.

The Chinese medical theories are mainly adopted from the works of philosophers, poets, and scholars who were not herbalists. In trying to interpret the theories, most people tend to commingle them with the empirical knowledge of herbs, resulting in confusion and less objectivity. For a review, please see two of my videos:
