My Organic Garden Tour 5/11/09

A month ago my Mom and I extended my organic garden space and had a planting party to celebrate my birthday. We had to plant in April due to the unpredictable rain showers God has been gifting us with this spring. I wanted to take you all on a little tour of my garden’s progress. My greens are coming in abundance! Oh what a joy! I have just begun to start using them and they taste incredible. Everything here is organically grown from soil to seed and treated with love, fairies and friends, music (outdoor radio and my crazy singing) and loving light – water – and air from God. I am growing atleast over 50 different types of garden gifts, all which are to be used RAW. This is REAL food. This is how we all should be eating – organical, homegrown or local, seasonal and raw & living foods. I pray over my garden and give gratitude to that which I pick and consume. I hope you enjoy! I will update as it continues to grow for me. I am growing too many things to list here but if you have a question about something I am growing then I will be happy to tell you if I am growing it and how it is doing, etc.

Bulk Organic Herbs – Better for You, Better for the World

]]>

There are many uses for bulk herbs and many people like to have them on hand for both culinary and apothecary purposes. For many individuals, bulk organic herbs are far superior to any other kind. Buying herbs wholesale however means that you won’t necessarily have to pay a premium for bulk organic herbs.

Why Organic?

It has become very apparent to people (if not their political leaders and corporate agricultural conglomerates) that the way food is raised and distributed today – with the use of artificial, petroleum-based fertilizers, shipping long distances, and the use of genetically-modified seeds – is not only bad for people’s health, it is bad from an socio-economic standpoint and bad for the planet. As a result, consumers are increasingly turning to locally and sustainably raised alternatives such as organic spices. These dried herbs are not only better for you, they are better for the world.

While organic spices and other organic food have traditionally been more expensive on the shelves, prices on many organic items have been coming down as supplies have increased. In addition, while bulk organic herbs may still have a higher shelf price than their non-organic counterparts, many of the “hidden costs” that are not paid directly, but rather in the form of illnesses, environmental problems and economic exploitation are absent. For these reasons, it’s actually less expensive in the long term to support producers of organic spices and dried herbs. As more consumers reject big corporate agriculture and turn to bulk organic herbs and other organic products, whole bulk spice costs should come down over time – and you may enjoy additional discounts when you purchase such herbs wholesale.

What is Available?

Nearly any kind of spice or herb available through standard corporate markets can also be obtained as bulk organic herbs. Wholesale bulk spice is derived from one of several plant-based sources:

1. Seeds: these include sesame, anise, nutmeg and poppyseed, among others.

2. Leaves: these are perhaps the most common of dried herbs. Most popular in cooking are members of the mint family, such as oregano, basil, and rosemary.

3. Roots: these may be in the form of dried herbs that are then powdered, such as licorice; more often however, retailers that sell bulk organic herbs usually carry these in the form of pastes, such as horseradish.

4. Bark: Cinnamon is among the most popular bulk herbs that fall into this category.

5. Fruits and bulbs: like roots, these bulk herbs are usually prepared as a paste, although some, such as garlic, can also be available in a dried powdered form.

Are They All Really Herbs?

Strictly speaking, not all of these wholesale bulk spices are “herbs” in the technical sense. In a culinary context, “herbs” are the leaves of plants, and may be used fresh or dried. Everything else – seeds, roots, bark and fruits and bulbs – are considered “spices.”

You can definitely save money by purchasing your herbs wholesale in bulk. While the actual amount you will save will vary depending on the source and types of bulk organic herbs you typically buy, it is a very economical way to stock your kitchen and your medicine cabinet.

Easily Grow an Organic Herb Garden

Herbs are wonderful plants. They add flavor to our meals, they add nutrients to our diet, and many have qualities that enhance our health. By growing an organic herb garden, you will be able to enjoy chemical free fresh herbs any time you choose. You will find the taste of your organic herbs is far superior to that of herbs grown with chemical fertilizers or processed commercially.

So how do you make sure your herb garden is organic? First of all, make sure that the seeds you plant are completely organic. Many commercial seeds have been treated chemically or come from plants that were subjected to pesticides. You can find for organic seeds easily by searching for that phrase on the internet. Make sure the seeds you buy are guaranteed organic as well as non-genetically modified.

You will have a large number of herb plants to choose from, so plant ones which you will use, as well as ones that will grow well in your climate. Many herbs are perennials, so you will want to plant these in one area, and set aside a second area for annual herbs, such as basil, cilantro and parsley. Before you plant, map out your herb garden. Many herbs will grow better if they are planted next to other specific herbs. Do your research on this, or ask the staff at your gardening store.

As you plant your seeds, pay attention to the planting and growing instructions on the seed packages. Choose a sunny area for your garden, and enrich your soil with organic compost.
Organic compost attracts and holds many essential plant nutrients. It has a sponge-like texture that retains moisture. It also binds the mineral portion of the soil loosely so air can reach the roots and the roots can easily penetrate the soil.

You will, of course, enjoy your herbs fresh throughout the growing season, but you can easily have them available all year long by drying them. For the best results, pick your herbs early in the day, when it is cooler. Cut large sprigs, gently wash them, and allow them to dry. Once dry, tie the herb stems together in bundles and hang them in a dry area away from direct sunlight. Once they are completely dry, crush the leaves and put them into jars. They will keep their full flavor for about a year.

You can also freeze your herbs, a method that retains the flavor and freshness. Once you have harvested the herbs, wash and dry them thoroughly. Leaving the stems, leaves and flowers intact, place the dried herb sprigs into a large freezer bag or container. To use them, just crumble off a few leaves. Some herbs retain flavor better dried, others when they are frozen. Check in a good herb book to see how to best preserve each type of herb.

You can use your organically grown herbs, fresh or preserved, in many other ways – to make herbal vinegars, butters and oils, for example. Not only will you save money by growing an organic herb garden, your plants will be healthier and lusher, and you will also have fresher, more healthy herbs to add zest and flavor to your cooking all year long.
