Herbs have been regarded as the perfect plants for centuries. They are truly a wonder because they provide us with such a wide variety of practical usefulness and beauty.  Herb Garden Plants have been indispensable to the betterment of humanity.  In times past herbal remedies were the primary solution available to man for curative relief.  Medicinal herb plants have been the inspiration for all modern pharmaceuticals.

Other uses for these wonderful plants include landscaping.  That’s right! Landscaping.  Some herb plants have beautiful flowers, leaves and foliage.  They can accent any flower garden or floral arrangement with incredible beauty or create attractive beauty in stand alone applications. Notable examples of ornamental herb plants include; Dittany of Crete, valerian, borage and chicory.

Fragrant aromas are another gift presented by herb plants.  Throughout recorded history aromatic herbs have been treasured for there heavenly aromas.  It is believed that Cleopatra charmed Antony with pleasant herbal based perfumes.  And where would we be without the indispensable “Fussy Tussy Mussy?”  These were little bouquets of the most aromatic herbs.  In the days before modern sewage disposal, conditions on city streets could be a little tough to endure.  A tussy mussy was a necessary item that a proper lady would never venture far without.  Keeping their nose buried in their tussy mussy allowed the lady of the day to move about the malodorous streets of the day.  This is an example of the valuable contributions aromatic herbs have made to humanity.

Herb plants are one of the special wonders of nature. They have many uses ranging from medicinal, aromatic, culinary to landscaping.  Their unique characteristics afford yet another use not usually associated with the wonder plants and that is they make great gifts.  Herbs combined attributes of flavors, aromas and beauty allow the creation of meaningful and unique gifts.  Examples of herb gifts include: nifty napkin rings, spruced up gift wrapping, swingin’ herbal swag, herbally good vinegar and herbal recipes.

Certain herbs can even be used as organic pest controls.  There as some herbs that emit odors that will repel harmful insects from other garden plants.  With the proper plant selection and location a vegetable gardener can protect his or her garden without the use of chemical pesticides.  In addition to protecting vegetable plants from harmful insects herbs planted near tomato plants will improve the flavor of the tomatoes.

Listed above are many of the things that herbs can do for us but by far the most popular and well know function of herbs is in cooking.  It is not known for sure but it is generally accepted that the use of herbs in food has been around as long as man has been cooking food.  The widespread use of culinary herbs has been evident in every culture and some ask the reason why.  Many academic explanations have been offered such as it stimulates the appetite, or it aids in digestion or it makes foul food edible but the answer to that academic question is simple and obvious.  Ask anyone how spaghetti would taste without basil.  Simply stated herbs make food taste good. That is the answer to the question and it is a tribute to the hard working plants that they continue to serve man down through the centuries.

Becoming a herb gardener opens the door to the wonderful world of herbs to you and your family. If you haven’t already made this discovery get started today on your path to herb happiness.

How to Select the Top 3 Herb Garden Plants

This article is dedicated to planning a successful herb garden and knowing which herb garden plants to use. If you have planted herb gardens in previous years this will help to revamp and refresh one already have. If you are planning an inside herb garden, since you control the atmosphere, you can choose whatever you like. My suggestion here would be to select a theme for your herb garden.

Chamomile is one of those herbs that even beginners can grow and it is hardy through much of the United States. Chamomile is also used in a variety of beauty products currently on the market from shampoo to skin cream. On top of this, you get to care and tend for the plants, which, if this is all you do, is enough reason to grow an herb garden. Seeing how the herbs mingle together and enjoying their fragrance are other benefits. Numerous varieties of cultivated plants, including many exotic economic plants, grow here in close proximity grouped according to their uses. Old, but once more interesting, cereal varieties have their own area here.

Sage grows quickly from seed and comes back year after year, even in cold medicinal herbsn recommends any well-draining container (make sure it has holes on the bottom) that is safe for growing food. You can use small pots for individual herbs, or plant several together in a 16- to 18-inch container. More information about this national movement can be found at www.localherbs.org , the new website of the Medicinal Herb Consortium (MHC), the national network of farmers who grow Chinese medicinal herbs in the U.S. A March 2008 Acupuncture Today article describes the full context of the new website, which functions as a portal for Oriental Medicine practitioners to place orders for ecologically, domestically grown herbs.

Full sun is the best for herbs, but it has been my experience that most herbs forerbgardensystem.com”>herb gardens will grow in partial shade. If your herbs are planted in partial shade, they may not grow as fast as when planted in full sun, but they will do just fine. Look for these insects on new plant growth and on the undersides of leaves. If found, knock pests off plants with a heavy blast of water or use insecticidal soap. Many are trained to grow upward. A well-designed potager can provide food, cut flowers and herbs for the home with very little maintenance.

Many Herbs are herbaceous; they die back to the ground in winter. Thoughtful pruning is not necessary for these varieties, just chop it off to the ground any old time. Therefore, in annuals and herbaceous varieties, harvesting the foliage consistently before the plant flowers can extend leaf production somewhat if care is taken to cut consistently.

Essential Herb Garden Plants

It only takes a basic knowledge of the variety of herb garden plants in the market place to get started.  This article is fortunately the right place to help with a general understanding of what you’ll need.  First decide what it is you would like to accomplish, do you want herbs you can use year round or only for certain seasons?  Herbs are like all other plants, they come in perennials, biennials and annuals.  Take a close look at what these terms mean:

Annuals – These herbs can’t handle cold, harsh winters.  So for basil, cilantro and other similar herbs you’ll have to plant seeds or small plants every year as they will only last for one growing season.

Biennials – You’ll want to get a rotation of herbs in this category since they only produce once every two years.  During the first year the herbs will focus on maturing and growing leaves, and then finally during the second year they will flower before finally dying.  Herbs in this category include angelica, caraway and parsley; plant in late spring for best results.

Perennials
– These herb garden plants will keep coming back year after year all by themselves.  Sage and winter savory are some of these hardy plants that will endure even the harshest of winters.

For any of these varieties of herbs to survive you will need to do the prep work.  First you’ll need the right soil; it needs to have a fine texture that can retain the right amount of water.  Before planting the seeds in very shallow soil add a little bit of water.  Once the seeds have been sowed press the dirt down gently, then if conditions are dry, place a wet newspaper or towel over the top during the germination process.

The second category that herbs can be broken down into includes how they are used.  Some are culinary, aromatic, medicinal or ornamental varieties.  We’ll take a look at each one.

Culinary Herbs – This includes herbs used as a garnish and those used in the cooking process.  They tend to have very strong flavors and are used in small amounts with roasts or chicken recipes.  Some popular herbs in this category are chives, basil, thyme, sage, savory and marjoram.

Aromatic Herbs – These herbs enhance the environment in which they are planted or displayed and they have a long shelf-life.  As you can probably tell from the name of the category these herbs have a pleasant fragrance that can be used in potpourri’s and perfumes.  These herbs include lavender, mint, rosemary and loyage.

Medicinal Herbs
– Through the centuries many cultures have discovered certain herbs benefit the body and mind.  There a number of medical studies that also seems to support this.  But before you ingest any medicinal herb make sure you do your homework first.  Some of these herbs, if taken incorrectly, can be harmful.

Ornamental Herbs – With beautiful flowers and leaves these herbs are used as decoration.  The bright blue flowers of the chicory and borage make these ornamental herbs a popular one.

Herb garden plants do come in a wide-variety that serves a multitude of uses.  Mint, for instance, not only makes a great potpourri but can also be used in tea, cooking and pest control.  As you grow your understanding of herbs you’ll be able to choose the perfect herbs to meet your needs.

Discoveries In My Home Herb Garden And Talkin Dirt On Chives Herb Plants

]]>

You can dive into growing a home herb garden in sublime blissful ignorance.  Especially if you choose chives plants as your path to grow herb garden plantings. I speak from earthy experience. Despite many missteps and blunders, somehow my chives plants were flourishing and bountiful.

I admit a happy chance landed those chives plants into my life some years ago. Yes, I stumbled into beginning my own home herb garden by planting chives plants aplenty! Usually people are led into planting an herb garden by their love of cooking with herbs. Nope. Not me. While an avid novice gardener, herbs were totally lacking in my cooking. But, an encounter with chives plants in my herb home garden changed all that. The entire experience drew me to introduce you to chives as an herb plant for your garden and share my tips and discoveries gardening with chives herbs taught me.

Typically people think of chives as these dried up little green pieces that look like cuttings from your lawn. Sadly little taste survives in this dried version. Most of us are introduced to using chives as an herb simply as a condiment for a baked potato…sour cream with chives. Due to its past classification as a common household herb, the fascinating features of chives as a plant and herb have been much maligned. Here’s what I unearthed as a beginner planting my own home herb garden when I somehow mistakenly ordered 9 chives plants, but intended to get only 1.

The Basics Of Chives Plants For The Home Herb Garden

Chives are part of the onion family but the flavor is much milder and more subtle. Until you’ve tasted fresh chives you won’t believe the difference in taste from those dried up commercial counterparts sold at the store! Chives grow in clumps, which is why they’re always referred to as plural. The upright green shoots growing from the clumps are really called the leaves of the plant.

Growing chives is a dream for beginners gardening herbs at home. I’m prime proof of how easy it is. In fact, for ease of growing I put them in the category of daylilies because they’re so indestructible no matter the amount of rain or scorching heat. I was clueless how to plant my chives plants (or any herb) in the garden when they arrived. Somehow they’ve survived in the clay soil of hot Kentucky summers for almost a decade now. You can even dig up their roots (actually little onion-like bulbs), divide them, and replant them just like daylilies! Although chives plants are best planted in a healthy mixture of soil, peat, sand and compost, my ignorance proves chives plants do well as long as they have plenty of sun and some water now and then.

In my accidental adventure growing herbs in my home garden, I discovered chives plants are perennial! That means, the plant dies back through the winter and sprouts new leaves in the spring. Perennials make a gardener’s life far easier simply because they DO automatically emerge every year without my help.

Also in the spring, the chives plant produces a bounty of beautiful purple “pom-pom” flowers that sprout up on tall stems. Who knew growing chives produced beautiful flowers as well? The flowers, similar in shape to the flowers in clover but bigger, can be used in dried ornamental bouquets, too. The bees happen to love those flowers. Just by growing my chives plants, there’s this added benefit of attracting the bees for pollinating some of my other garden plantings. The flowers are edible, but frankly I haven’t given that a try.

Another side benefit for my outdoor home garden is the chives plants actually protect my other plants and flowers from unwanted insects–like aphids. Insects apparently find chives to be repulsive. You can also use the juice of the leaves as a repellant. The juice is equally repugnant to pests. The chives plants themselves are very hardy and don’t seem to be prone to diseases (or pests).

Home Herb Garden Basics – Chives Culinary Side

Chives are chock full of vitamin A and C, plus calcium and iron. A great choice to flavor foods, cut chives are fat free and combine well with more than sour cream and cream cheese. I found them a winning alternative to salt seasoning. Harvesting chives is a simple task. Simply snip some of those leaves (the soft green shoots) down to the base. The chives plants will continue replenishing itself by regrowing the leaves continuously during its growing season.

Chop the leaves into smaller pieces and use them fresh. The oils of the plants are its seasoning source. By chopping the leaves, the oils are released to flavor your food along with an arresting aroma. Store what you don’t use in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for about a week. Postpone washing the chives until you use them. The extra moisture will make them wilt and decay rapidly.

Add them for flavoring to perk up your soups, sandwiches, fish, vegetable dishes, sauces, and salads. The vast variety of culinary uses can ignite those creative juices and rock your recipes.

For instance, I have a friend whose family loves to enjoy ‘chives sandwiches’ every spring. Avoid the mistake of growing chives as a basic garden herb simply for a garnish…it’s so much more versatile. Try using them to make an herb vinegar. A low cost gift exhibiting your new talents in growing herbs in your home garden without revealing you’re a beginner!

3 Important Tips for Your Herb Garden Plants

Like other types of plants, herb garden plants come in different forms. There are different varieties of herbs. If you are planning to have one type of herb garden plant, you should know how to care for it and how to use it properly. To better understand different types of herb garden plants and their uses, you should continue reading this article.

Annuals like basil, cilantro, and summer savory will not survive a frost.  They need to be planted from a seed or a small plant every year.  Perennials like sage and winter savory can survive colder temperatures and will return year after year.  Biennial herbs are herb garden plants that form leaves in their first growing season and flowers and seed in the second season, then die.  Biennial herb garden plants like parsley, angelica, or caraway should be sown in late spring directly into the garden.  Prepare the soil first by working it to a fine texture and wet it slightly.  Plant the seeds in shallow rows then firm the soil on top of them.  Fine seeds can be planted in a mixture of sand which will allow them to spread more evenly.  You can also cover the bed with wet burlap or paper in order to keep the soil moist during germination.

Herb garden plants are also grouped into the categories for which they are used.  Culinary herbs are probably the most useful to herb gardeners.  They have a huge range of different uses in cooking.  Because of their strong flavors, herbs like chives, thyme, basil, sage, savory, and marjoram are generally used in small quantities to add flavor to different types of food.  Parsley are extremely popular herb garden plants that are used mostly as a garnish.  Aromatic herbs have pleasant smelling flowers or foliage.  Oils from aromatic herbs like loyage, mint, and rosemary can be used to make different types of perfumes, toilet water, or other various scents.  Parts of aromatic herb garden plants used intact can also be used in the home to scent linens or clothing.  They can also be dried and made into potpourri which will enable them to be able to retain their aroma for a long period of time.  Lavender and lemon verbenas are great herb garden plants to use for potpourri.  Some herbs are also used for medicinal purposes.  For centuries herbs have been thought to have the ability to cure the body.  Present medical knowledge recognizes that some herb garden plants are beneficial to ones health, others are overrated.  Herbs used for medicinal purposes should be used carefully.  Some herb garden plants are harmless but others can be dangerous if eaten.

Herb garden plants are not only used for their flavor, scent, or ability to heal. Some of them are used to decorate houses because of their brightly colored flowers and foliage. Valerian which has light colored flowers and crimson blossoms are favorite decors. Borage and chicory are also used because they have beautiful blue flowers.

Herb garden plants are categorized with their uses but still some of them can be used in different purposes. Mint can be used either for cooking, tea, and pest control. Whatever purpose you have in herb plants, at least you have the right knowledge of their proper uses.
